Sweet Playful Newborn In-Home Family Photo Session

As a photographer, it is a special time to be invited into your home for a photo session and create timeless images of you and your family and newborn.

A couple of weeks ago this I had the special privilege to photograph this little guys newborn session in San Diego. I first met this sweet family two years ago when I photographed their first sons 1st birthday pictures and love watching them grow!  One of my favorite things about photographing families is reconnecting every year and documenting these little slices of life. Naturally, I was soooo excited to meet their newest for an in-home newborn session! Just look at this collection of images. Pure sweetness! At-home lifestyle newborn sessions are about the connection and newness of a family. I love to capture sincere moments with the family all together and each family member with the new baby.

considering newborn photos?! here are a few common questions I get asked:

Where will we do photos?
Sessions take place in the client's home, preferably in the nursery, master bedroom, and living room.  If the weather permits, we can venture outside, but we want to keep your newborn warm and comfortable.  Do not worry about your house is a mess—you just had a baby! I will open the blinds/curtains to let in as much light as possible.  I will move things out of the way or over to a corner, and your house will appear picture perfect in your photos.

How do I prepare my newborn?
The sweet part of an in home session is that you are at home! Try and relax, new babies cry and will usually need to eat during the shoot— AND THAT'S OKAY :) This is why I plan for 2 hours to allow for plenty of breaks, feedings, and diaper/outfit changes.  If possible its a good idea to try and feed your baby right before the session, so they’re sleepy and content. If siblings are involved, I capture those photos first so that they can have a break during the remainder the session.  Once we finish with family photos I spend some time photographing the baby alone; these are typically done when the baby is sleepiest.

What should we wear?

I recommend keeping it simple and comfortable. Neutral, tones (creams, whites, grays or pastel tones) photograph well. Feel free to little pops of color to your outfit, if you wish by using jewelry or accessories. Stay away from prominent logos or writing on clothing. For your husband, the same rules apply.

What should the baby wear?
I prefer babies dressed plain onesies, muslin swaddles, or wrapped up in a cozy blanket- whatever their comfort level is.  I take pictures of babies swaddled or undressed, and they are posed in a way you'd find them naturally. I will also bring a few simple wraps and knit hats for you to choose from.

How long are these sessions?

A typical lifestyle newborn session takes 2-2.5 hours. This allows plenty of time for newborn feeding and diaper changes. Get in touch I am happy to answer any questions!
